Claremont, California, in Los Angeles county, is 3 miles NE of Pomona, California (center to center) and 21 miles NW of Riverside, California. Claremont is a college town situated at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. It features seven higher education institutions and several of them are often ranked with the best colleges in the country. The city features a large number of historic structures. In 2007 Money Magazine rated Claremont as the fifth best place to live in the nation.

With its vast number of trees and numerous residents with doctorates, Claremont is referred to as “the City of Trees and PhDs.” It’s mostly a residential area. The northern part of Claremont feature a large number of upscale homes. The municipality constantly receives the National Arbor Day Associations’s Tree City USA award. Claremont features Neo-Classical Revival, Victorian, Craftsman and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Claremont History

The Serrano Indians were the initial inhabitants. The Spanish period in California began in 1771. The Claremont area was part of the acreage owned by the Mission San Gabriel. In 1834 the vast majority of this land became part of the Rancho San Jose. The first claim for land filed by a European occurred in 1871.

The city of Claremont was created in 1887, primarily due to the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad. Claremont was incorporated in 1907. Soon, the colleges were expanding and the citrus industry was thriving. After the Second World War was over most of the citrus groves were converted to homes.

Claremont Attractions

  • Padua Hills Theatre is a notable historic site.
  • The Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden includes a large number of Californian plants.
  • The Village incldudes a variety of shops, art galleries, boutiques and restaurants and is popular with college students.
  • The Garner House is a noteworthy historic structure.
  • John R. Rodman Arboretum is situated on Pitzer College campus and features a wide variety of attractive gardens.
  • Memorial Park hosts a variety of community events.

Claremont Activities

The city features numerous parks for outdoor activities. The Thompson Creek Trail is popular for walking, bicycle riding and jogging. Golfing enthusiasts enjoy the region’s quality courses. A wide variety of activities and entertainment are available in nearby Los Angeles. The beaches along the Pacific Coast are nearby. The San Gabriel Mountains are popular for a variety of recreational activities.

Claremont Transportation

Air travel is provided at the close by Ontario International Airport. Metrolink offers train service to Los Angeles and San Bernardino.

Claremont Higher Education

The Claremont Colleges are a collection of seven colleges including, Scripps, Pitzer, Pomona, Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd colleges as well as Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute. The colleges are within walking distance of each other. The Claremont School of Theology is also situated in the city.
