Colton History

The city’s history dates back to the 1770s when the explorations from Mexico brought Europeans to this area. Prior to this, Colton was inhabited by the Gua-chama, Seranno and San Gorgonio Native Americans. Agua Mansa, or ‘Gentle Waters,’ is the southwest section of Colton where the New Mexico Pioneers settled in 1842. Colton Crossing is one of the busiest railroad crossings of the United States. It is the junction of the main transcontinental trunk lines of Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. It was built around 1875, the same year as the official foundation of Colton. The city was incorporated in 1887.
