Introduction to Highland, California

Highland, California, in San Bernardino county, is 4 miles E of San Bernardino, California (center to center) and 16 miles NE of Riverside, California. It’s flanked by the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains. The city was named after the close by tableland and is surrounded by a large urban area. Some of the city’s schools have been named “California Distinguished Schools.”

Highlands History

The Spaniards explored the area in 1772. Settlements were established in 1856. Henry Rabel constructed bath houses and a small hotel to attract customers who were fond of the area’s medicinal springs. A significant increase in tourism occurred with the construction of Harlem Springs in 1877. In 1885 the Serrano Indians were relocated by the government to the San Manuel Reservation.

From 1883 to 1888 the North Fork Water Ditch provided irrigation water which allowed growers to establish a large number of orange groves. The population grew significantly and the orange and lemon packing facilities were thriving due to the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1881. The Highland Lumber Company took advantage of the trees located in the nearby mountains. Highland was incorporated in 1987.

Highland Area Attractions

The San Bernardino County Museum, Edwards Mansion, Redlands Historic House and the Kimberly Crest House & Gardens are some of the notable attractions in the area. Highland features an enjoyable old-town area. The Citrus Harvest Festival is a popular event. The San Manuel Amphitheater features a variety of entertainment. Residents have opportunities to listen to the music of the Inland Empire Symphony.

Highland Activities

The nearby San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains provide opportunities for skiing and a variety of outdoor activities. Lake Gregory Regional Park, Arrowhead, Silverwood and Big Bear lakes are nearby and popular for recreational activities. The well known tourist destination, Palm Springs is about 45 minutes away. Highland features an extensive trail system.

The Castle Amusement Park and the San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino are nearby. The San Bernardino County Fair is a popular event. Golf enthusiasts enjoy the nearby courses including San Bernardino Golf Club, Palm Meadows Golf Club, Arrowhead Country Club and the Shandon Hills Golf Club.

Highland Higher Education

The city is served by the nearby University of Redlands, University of California at Riverside, Loma Linda University, California State University San Bernardino and San Bernardino Community College.

Highland Transportation

The city is served by the Riverside Municipal Airport and the San Bernardino International Airport.
